Southern Style Green Beans with Bacon

 

  1. In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the skillet.
  2. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté in the bacon grease until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  3. Add the fresh green beans to the skillet and toss to coat in the bacon grease and onions.
  4. Pour in the chicken broth and stir in the brown sugar and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.
  5. Cover the skillet and cook the green beans for about 20 minutes, or until tender, stirring occasionally.
  6. Remove the lid and cook for an additional 5 minutes to allow the liquid to reduce slightly.
  7. Stir the cooked bacon back into the green beans. Season with salt to taste before serving.
