How to clean a dirty mattress: 8 tips

Today we will learn how to clean a dirty mattress, whether it is caused by urine, moisture or due to its age, which is quite normal in any home. Some people are unaware of how dangerous it can be not to clean the mattress every week. As often as you change the sheets every day, the bacteria pass over them and end up in the mattress, which allows them to proliferate without any problem.

Even if it is as clean as possible, these bacteria are always present. In a study by a university in the United States, it was shown that more than a third of the bacteria found in the sheets come from our own body, including fecal, skin and saliva bacteria.

Added to this are the stains caused by moisture, which can cause very serious respiratory diseases. In this article we will show you some homemade and inexpensive tricks to remove different types of stains and bad smells and make your mattress look like new.

How to clean a mattress: the 8 best tricks
1- White vinegar
This method is perfect for recent mold stains. On a damp cloth we spray water, dishwashing liquid and plenty of vinegar. We rub a little on the affected area and leave it to act for a few hours.

This mixture affects the pH of the mold and eliminates all the bacteria that are in the stain. And don’t worry, it doesn’t leave a vinegar smell because it disappears over time.

2- Baking soda: how to clean a mattress with pee?

To remove urine stains from a mattress, we simply apply baking soda to the stain and leave it to act for about 30 minutes.

After a while we rub the stain with a sponge and soapy water in appropriate quantities. Finally we clean with a damp cloth and let it dry.

3- Hydrogen peroxide (oxygenated water)
To remove the oldest mold stains we need 30 ml of hydrogen peroxide and 1 tablespoon of baking soda. We mix well and apply this mixture to a toothbrush that we are not using.

Now we simply brush the stain until the mixture becomes very foamy. Finally, we remove the excess with a slightly damp cloth.

4- Detergent
Removing blood stains can be tedious, but for this you only need one product and patience. We put some dishwashing liquid on a damp cloth and apply it to the stain (without rubbing).

After about 15 minutes, we clean excess detergent with a completely dry cloth. It may not completely remove the stain the first time, but if you repeat this process again, the stain will disappear completely.
