For the Beef Mixture:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Peppers and Onions:

  • 1 large green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 large red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For Assembly:

  • 4 pita breads or flatbreads
  • Tzatziki sauce or plain Greek yogurt
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Sliced cucumbers
  • Chopped fresh parsley or dill (optional)

  1. Cook the beef: In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. Break it apart with a spoon and cook until browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat and set aside.
  2. Sauté peppers and onions: In another skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add sliced peppers and onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook until soft and slightly caramelized, about 7-10 minutes.
  3. Warm the pita: Heat pita breads in a dry pan or oven until soft and pliable.
  4. Assemble gyros: Layer beef, sautéed peppers and onions on each pita. Top with tzatziki or yogurt, tomatoes, cucumbers, and fresh herbs if using.
  5. Serve: Fold and enjoy immediately.
