Costco-Style Chocolate Cake Recipe

This cake is known for its super moist texture and creamy chocolate frosting that melts in your mouth. Perfect for birthdays, parties, or any special occasion.

Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (adjust as needed)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Make the cake batter:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add milk, oil, eggs, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed until smooth. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin).
  2. Bake:
Pour batter evenly into pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  3. Prepare frosting:
Beat butter and cocoa powder until combined. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with cream, beating until smooth and fluffy. Stir in vanilla and salt.
  4. Assemble:
Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting on top, then add the second layer and frost the top and sides.

This cake replicates that luscious, tender crumb and rich frosting you love from the store bakery. Serve chilled or at room temperature for the best texture and flavor.
